How To Get Back To Basics - Email Marketing 101

By Bob Steele

Most likely you have studied email marketing and how to go about it. This is because every Internet Marketer insists that email marketing is the best way to make money online. It is correct, that quite often, your list is where your profits are. By now, you have most likely been keeping your eye out for all of the obscure techniques and strategies that will help your list boost its profits. Would you be amazed to learn that getting back to basics and selling merchandise to people through emails is the greatest thing to do? You should always remember the following points.

Make sure you split test your email messages. Split testing is a lot easier in email marketing than in other areas of IM, like sites, landing pages and so on, but it is critical across the board.

Always remember that the only email address you are going to get, at least in the beginning, is the address that someone thinks you should have. Many people sign up for opt-in lists with a special email address that they've created just for that purpose. What you have to do is impress them with your messages so that they'll want to use their "real" address to sign up. This is frustrating-you probably want all sorts of primary email addresses on your list but your list server won't know the difference.

The only email you'll get when people sign up is the one they are comfortable giving you. Many people sign up for opt-in lists with a special email address that they've created just for that purpose. What you have to do is impress them with your messages so that they'll want to use their "real" address to sign up. You may find it frustrating because you want a list full of principal addresses but your server won't be able to differentiate.

Your list will not appreciate emails all the time. Sending out several emails a week is what some people recommend. Every two or three days, you need to send out an article to your subscribers for them to read. However, this is not always the best thing to do. You should know your list. The promotions you have sent - you should remember them all. It is your audience. You should cater to their every need. It is probably a very bad idea to bombard your list with emails, especially if your email list is comprised of busy professionals that do not have the time.

Doing too much is easy when you see your sales start to decline and people leaving your list. This generally annoys people. The only way to fix the problem is to make sure you go back to basics. After all, your foundation is solid for a reason, right? The speed with which a bad situation can be turned around may surprise you but all it takes is going back to what worked for you initially.
